Lyft Expands Waymo Robotaxi Network in Nashville Amid Regulatory and Technological Challenges

This partnership creates a replicable template. Waymo operates 3,500 to 4,000 vehicles across 14 U.S. markets but has focused on building its own fleet and technology. Lyft's involvement lets Waymo focus on autonomous software while outsourcing operational headaches—depot staffing, vehicle cleaning, charging logistics. That formula could unlock rapid expansion in new cities.
NVIDIA argues that robotaxi scale requires a three-layer computing architecture: one system for training AI models on massive driving datasets, a second for simulating and validating safety scenarios, and a third for real-time decision-making inside the vehicle. Each layer demands substantial compute resources.
Tesla relies on a "vision-only" approach using cameras and custom processors. Waymo and other competitors use multiple sensors (cameras, lidar, radar) fed into centralized data centers for continuous refinement. As fleets grow from hundreds to thousands of vehicles, the choice of computing backbone will determine which company can improve safety fastest and scale without bottlenecks.
