Rare 2.2-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Grimsby and Surrounding Lincolnshire Communities

August tremor tally: UK authorities reported 10 tremors in August, with the Grimsby 2.2-magnitude quake described as the strongest of the month.
Past Grimsby quakes: The area experienced a 3.9-magnitude quake in June 2018, which was felt as far as about 60 miles away.
Past Grimsby quakes: The 2008 onshore quake measured 5.2 and was described as the largest such event in years, with some building damage and noticeable shaking.
Social media accounts detailed the tremor as a quick shake, a bang like the house being hit, and a deep rumble.
A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck Grimsby, Lincolnshire, just before 7:50pm, shaking homes across the town and nearby Cleethorpes. Birmingham Mail reported that residents felt their houses shake and heard a loud bang, with the epicentre located in the Scartho area at a depth of about 5 kilometers.
The British Geological Survey classifies this as a minor tremor — the kind typically felt only near where it happens. The UK experiences 200 to 300 such events every year, but this was the strongest quake recorded in August, according to UK authorities.
Social media posts flooded in as the tremor struck. Devon Live reported that people in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and surrounding areas felt shaking and rumbling in their homes. Residents described it as a quick shake, a bang like something hit the house, and a deep rumble beneath their feet.
This 2.2 quake is mild compared to recent tremors in the area. A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck in June 2018, shaking homes up to 60 miles away. Even larger was the 5.2 magnitude onshore quake in 2008 — the biggest the region has seen in recent years — which caused some building damage and noticeable shaking across a wide area.
According to Plymouth Herald, the British Geological Survey data shows that 2.2 is classified as a minor tremor. Most people only feel it if they're very close to where it happens. But in Grimsby's case, enough residents were near the epicentre that many experienced the shake directly in their homes and felt the rumbling beneath their feet.
