OpenAI introduces global virtual clothing try-on features for ChatGPT shopping tools.

The virtual try-on began rolling out globally on October 1 and is available on both mobile devices and the web.
ChatGPT’s existing Shopping Research mode can ask about a shopper’s requirements and budget, check products online, and produce a personalized comparison guide with trade-offs and links.
Users can organize saved items into folders, including products and try-on images, and later ask ChatGPT to build an outfit around a style description.
OpenAI had previously dropped its Instant Checkout experiment after it performed poorly, according to one report on the company’s evolving e-commerce efforts.
OpenAI is turning ChatGPT into a virtual fitting room. Starting October 1, users can upload a selfie or full-body photo to see how clothes and accessories look on them before buying. Mixed News reports the feature rolls out globally on mobile and web, powered by ChatGPT Images 2.5, which produces faster images with better lighting and texture detail.
The update adds a "Favorites" library where shoppers can save products and try-on images in organized folders. PC Tablet notes users can ask ChatGPT to build outfits around a style description. OpenAI warns the previews don't guarantee fit or size, so shoppers must still check product measurements at retailers.
OpenAI scrapped its "Instant Checkout" feature in March 2026 after it flopped. Dev To explains that by ditching payment processing, OpenAI now focuses on the pre-purchase phase where shoppers browse and compare. Virtual try-ons and Favorites libraries let ChatGPT compete for high-intent shoppers early, before they leave the app to complete transactions elsewhere.
This pivot follows TechRepublic's observation that OpenAI integrated Shopify in July 2025, then launched Shopping Research mode in November 2025 to generate personalized comparison guides with product links and trade-offs. The new try-on tool deepens engagement without OpenAI handling any payments.
ChatGPT Images 2.5, deployed in September 2026, generates photos 50% faster than its predecessor. AdGully reports the engine produces more natural lighting and detailed textures, making virtual try-ons look realistic. The speed boost means users see results almost instantly after uploading a selfie and selecting a product image or screenshot.
Reference photos are saved in user accounts by default for repeat try-ons. TechRepublic warns that selfies remain stored unless deleted in Settings > Personalization, raising privacy concerns for shoppers who don't opt out of data collection used for model training.
Google rolled out selfie-based virtual try-on for Search users in December 2025. PC Tablet notes OpenAI is now catching up, but with a key advantage: ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly active users already use the app for discovery and research. OpenAI can convert existing traffic into fashion shoppers without building new habits.
AdGully describes the launch as ChatGPT evolving into a full-stack commerce discovery platform. Brands now get higher engagement through visual product interaction. Pinterest's visual discovery and Google Shopping's comparison tools face new pressure as ChatGPT bundles try-ons, outfit suggestions, and product research in one place.
