International Paper Reports Q2 Loss as Maintenance Costs, Mixed Demand Impact Results

Packaging Solutions North America posted Q2 operating profit of $204 million, down 17% from Q1, with gains from higher prices, favorable mix and increased volumes driven by domestic expansion, seasonality and an extra shipping day.
The Europe/Middle East & Africa region (EMEA) posted an operating loss of $80 million in Q2, widening from a $51 million loss in Q1, under pressure from higher planned maintenance outage costs and rising selling and administrative costs due to annual wage increases.
Riverdale machine conversion was completed on time, and the company executed acquisitions including the NORPAC mill in Longview, Washington, and the Delmarva corrugated packaging site in Dover, Delaware.
Pine Hill, Alabama mill outage is expected to contribute about $85 million negative to the third-quarter EBITDA, as part of the guidance that places 2026 adjusted EBITDA in a $780 million to $830 million range.
Packaging Solutions North America generated roughly $425 million in adjusted EBITDA for Q2, with about $37 million from favorable price/mix and $16 million from volume, offset by approximately $127 million of unfavorable maintenance-outage costs; the quarter also benefited from an insurance recovery related to Ixtoc and the absence of winter-storm effects from Q1.
International Paper swung to a net loss of $12 million in the second quarter of 2026, reversing a $75 million profit from the same period a year ago, according to Yahoo Finance. Net sales slipped to $6.0 billion from $6.14 billion, as heavy maintenance outages and softer demand in Europe weighed on results.
Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations fell 12% year over year to roughly $587 million, MarketScreener reported. Despite the loss, the company said cash generation rose about 10%, and management pointed to stronger mill performance and cost discipline as bright spots.
The Pine Hill, Alabama mill outage was one of the biggest drags on the quarter. Management expects it to contribute about $85 million in negative impact to third-quarter EBITDA as well, according to Yahoo Finance. Planned maintenance at the Riverdale site also added costs during Q2.
North America's Packaging Solutions segment posted an adjusted EBITDA of roughly $425 million for Q2. But about $127 million of that was eaten up by unfavorable maintenance-outage costs, Seeking Alpha noted. The quarter did get a boost from an insurance recovery tied to the Ixtoc incident and the absence of winter-storm effects that hit Q1.
The contrast between regions was stark. North American box volumes rose about 1.7% year over year. The Packaging Solutions North America segment posted a Q2 operating profit of $204 million, driven by higher prices, favorable product mix, and an extra shipping day, per Yahoo Finance.
Europe told a very different story. The EMEA region — Europe, Middle East, and Africa — posted an operating loss of $80 million in Q2. That widened from a $51 million loss in Q1. Higher planned maintenance costs and annual wage increases pushed selling and administrative expenses up, according to GuruFocus.
International Paper finished its Riverdale machine conversion on time. The company also made two acquisitions during the quarter: the NORPAC mill in Longview, Washington, and the Delmarva corrugated packaging site in Dover, Delaware, Yahoo Finance reported. Both moves are part of a broader push to simplify and strengthen the North American network.
CEO Andy Silvernail has emphasized reliability and what the company calls "value-driven investments" as central to the turnaround strategy, per the earnings call transcript from GuruFocus. The company is also working on North American network optimization as it trims less-efficient assets.
International Paper set its full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance at $780 million to $830 million. That range already bakes in the roughly $85 million hit from the Pine Hill outage, according to MarketScreener. The guidance signals management does not expect a sharp second-half rebound.
The company said it will keep focusing on cost discipline, asset simplification, and reliability improvements. Seeking Alpha noted that the earnings call highlighted a "blended performance" — real operational progress in North America set against ongoing headwinds in Europe and from planned outages.
