Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $173 Million Ahead of Labor Day Drawing

The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $173 million after no ticket matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing, according to USA Today. The cash lump sum option is worth $74.6 million before taxes. The next drawing is scheduled for Monday, September 7, giving players a long holiday weekend to purchase tickets.
Powerball tickets cost $2 each and are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to The Providence Journal. To win the jackpot, all six numbers must match — five white balls and one red Powerball. The odds of winning are just 1 in 292 million.
This marks the ninth consecutive Powerball drawing with no grand prize winner, according to USA Today. The jackpot rolled over from $150 million after Wednesday's drawing produced no tickets matching all six numbers. Large jackpots typically build after multiple rollovers with no winners.
The $74.6 million cash option sounds big, but taxes take a huge chunk. Federal withholding immediately removes 24%, or about $17.9 million, according to financial analysis. Additional federal taxes at the top bracket remove another $9.65 million. That leaves roughly $47 million before state and local taxes kick in.
Labor Day weekend typically sees a spike in lottery ticket purchases as more people travel and have spare time, according to The Des Moines Register. Holiday periods are peak times for casual players to grab tickets at gas stations and convenience stores. The long weekend gives players several days to purchase before Monday's drawing.
Players can choose between an annuity spread over 30 years or the lump sum cash option, according to North Jersey. Most winners choose the lump sum despite the tax hit, preferring immediate money over decades of payments. Either way, the jackpot is subject to federal withholding and state taxes that vary by location.
