Three Sunderland College Students Die After Car Plunges Into River Wear

Three teenagers—Jackson Duke, 17, and Luke Etheridge and Zara Shaw, both 16—died after a black Audi A3 went off the road and plunged into the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland. A fourth teenager, a 17-year-old boy, escaped with non-serious injuries and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving; police say they are still investigating who was driving and what led to the crash. Sunderland College said the three who died were students at its Bede Campus, as police offered condolences to their families and urged the public not to speculate.
Police said they do not believe any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Sunderland College said support was available to students and staff affected by the deaths, and paid tribute to the emergency services and others who responded.
Emergency crews sealed off a car park at the scene; images showed ambulances, police vehicles and a fire engine, while two rescue boats were deployed on the river.
Police carried out an operation to recover the Audi on Wednesday, the day after the crash.
