The UK has become the first country in Europe to approve Eli Lilly's new weight-loss pill, orforglipron, sold under the brand name Foundayo, according to Upday. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) — the UK's drug watchdog — gave the green light for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above if they have a weight-related health condition.
The pill is taken once a day with no food or water restrictions, making it simpler than many existing treatments. Clinical data suggests patients could lose around 11.2% of their body weight after 72 weeks of use, LADbible reported. It also treats poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
How Foundayo Works and Who Can Get It
Foundayo is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — a type of drug that mimics hormones in the gut to reduce hunger. It starts at a low dose of 0.8mg and steps up gradually. Patients must spend at least one month at each dose level before moving higher, Yahoo News reported.

MHRA Approval Puts UK Ahead of the Rest of Europe
The MHRA approved Foundayo ahead of any other European regulator. Julian Beach of the MHRA said the agency carried out a "rigorous assessment" of the drug and that ongoing safety monitoring will continue after approval, Kent Live reported.
This is the UK's second GLP-1 weight-loss pill approval in quick succession. The Wegovy pill was approved in June, making it the first GLP-1 tablet cleared for weight loss. NHS Access Is Not Guaranteed Yet
Regulatory approval does not mean the pill will be available on the NHS straight away. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) must first evaluate whether Foundayo offers good value for money before recommending NHS funding, according to Yahoo News.
Until NICE makes its decision, patients cannot get Foundayo through the NHS. Delays in funding decisions are common for new drugs. Anyone seeking the pill now would likely need to pay privately. Healthcare services are still working out access and funding arrangements, Upday noted.
