EU Scrutinizes Mladic Funeral

European Union Monitors Serbia Over State Funeral Plans for Convicted War Criminal Ratko Mladic

The European Union is monitoring the funeral of former Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic, who was convicted of genocide by a U.N. court but remains a hero to many Serbs. Mladick was sentenced in 2017 to life imprisonment for orchestrating the massacre of over 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995 and the siege of Sarajevo during the 1992-95 conflict. His remains were flown to Serbia on a government plane from The Hague, Netherlands, following his death last week. Serbia's Justice Minister Nenad Vujic had previously stated that Mladich would receive full state honors at the funeral. The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights has urged authorities in Serbia and the Serb-run entity of Bosnia to "counter the glorification of convicted war criminals" which is illegal in Bosnia and violates European Convention on Human Rights.
