Gustav Forsling scores late in overtime to give Panthers opening win over Hurricanes

The Florida Panthers spoiled the Carolina Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup banner celebration with a 1-0 overtime win in the teams’ season opener. Gustav Forsling scored the winner with 4.3 seconds left in overtime, finishing a pass from Carter Verhaeghe. Jacob Markstrom made a shutout in his return to Florida, while both teams’ penalty kills held firm and neither power play scored. The physical, tightly defended game featured heavy contact and numerous penalties.
Jacob Markstrom’s shutout included a key second-period breakaway stop on Sebastian Aho. One report credited Markstrom with 15 saves, while another reported 18.
Florida went 0-for-7 on the power play, while Carolina went 0-for-6; the Panthers’ penalty kill successfully killed all six Carolina opportunities.
Brady Tkachuk made his first official appearance for Florida, skating alongside his brother Matthew; Aleksander Barkov also returned after a knee injury sidelined him for the entire previous season.
The teams combined for 84 hits. Florida then headed west for home-openers against the Sharks, Ducks and Kings, with no back-to-back games scheduled on that trip.
