Simon Cowell Recovers After Successful Back Surgery Amid Ongoing Spinal Issues

Howie Mandel said Cowell was only “hours out of surgery” when he gave the update and explained that he had not called him yet because an immediate phone call might not be what Cowell needed after the procedure.
Mandel said he was eager to visit Cowell and offer his best wishes, adding, “I’m hoping that Simon makes his way back and has a speedy, quick recovery.”
During Cowell’s absence, the September 8 quarterfinal episode was scheduled to feature Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Sofía Vergara judging acts including singer Travis Garland, impersonator Cameron Logsdon, magic duo Young & Strange and singer Lara D.
The quarterfinal performers were competing for a place in the finals and the chance to win a $1 million cash prize.
Simon Cowell's back surgery went well, according to Howie Mandel, who gave an update on the America's Got Talent judge's recovery. Mandel said Cowell was only hours out of surgery when he shared the news, though the exact date for Cowell's return to the show remains unknown.
Cowell has battled back problems since a 2020 electric-bike accident that broke multiple bones in his spine. Terry Crews announced earlier that Cowell needed surgery that couldn't wait but wasn't an emergency. Meanwhile, Kenan Thompson stepped in temporarily, and former judge Heidi Klum will guest judge during his absence.
Howie Mandel explained why he hadn't called Cowell right after surgery. 'I didn't want to be that first call,' Mandel said, noting that a phone call might not be what Cowell needed immediately following the procedure. Mandel added he hoped to visit soon and said, 'I'm hoping that Simon makes his way back and has a speedy, quick recovery.'
The America's Got Talent judge has dealt with persistent back pain since 2020. That year, Cowell fell off an electric bike and suffered multiple spinal fractures. The injury caused ongoing health issues that eventually led to this surgery. Doctors said the operation couldn't be delayed but wasn't considered a medical emergency.
Heidi Klum will return as a guest judge to fill Cowell's seat while he recovers. The September 8 quarterfinal episode featured Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Mel B, and Sofía Vergara judging acts. Performers competing that night included singer Travis Garland, impersonator Cameron Logsdon, magic duo Young & Strange, and singer Lara D.
The quarterfinal contestants battled for spots in the finals and a shot at winning one million dollars. Kenan Thompson also filled in for Cowell during the initial days of his absence from the judge's panel.
