University of Michigan Pauses Controversial Freshman Grade Plan Following National Backlash

U-M has put on hold a plan to shield thousands of freshmen's first-semester grades due to national backlash. The University of Michigan's president, Domenico Grasso, directed the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts to allow more input, analysis and discussion. The plan, which was set to begin in fall 2027, would replace first-SEmester letter grades on LSA freshmen's external transcripts with pass/no-credit marks. Students would still receive grades and professor feedback, but the grades would not count toward their GPAs. Critics argue that the policy could reduce academic motivation or rigor and could harm students' academic performance. It is unclear whether the pilot will ultimately move forward.
