Indian Stocks Gain as Falling Crude Prices Lift Benchmark Indices

Solar Industries set a target of ₹13,200 crore in revenue and more than ₹1,700 crore in EBITDA by FY28 following its acquisition of Omnia.
The Nifty Realty index fell about 4% during afternoon trading, while the Nifty IT index gained 2%, making it the only sectoral index in positive territory at that point in the session.
The Diamond, Gems and Jewellery sector dropped nearly 7%, while Capital Goods–Electrical Equipment rose 1.83%, highlighting a sharp rotation toward industrial stocks and away from jewellery-related companies.
The benchmark indices were supported by declining crude prices, which helped lift sentiment for a third consecutive session in one market update and a second consecutive session in another.
At the close, the Nifty 50 ended at 23,217.60, up 99 points or 0.43%, while the Sensex finished at 74,336.45, gaining 332.63 points or 0.45%.
Indian stock markets closed higher on September 16, 2026, with the Nifty 50 gaining 99 points or 0.43% to end at 23,217.60 and the Sensex rising 332.63 points or 0.45% to finish at 74,336.45. Rediff reported the rally was driven by falling crude oil prices, foreign fund inflows, and positive global sentiment, marking the fourth consecutive session of gains for the benchmark indices.
Consumer durables, capital goods, cables, and information technology stocks led the gains during the session. The Hindu Business Line noted that the Nifty IT index surged 2%, becoming the only sectoral index in positive territory during afternoon trading. However, broader markets struggled, with midcap and small-cap indexes declining as investor caution persisted ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision.
Realty stocks bore the brunt of selling, with the Nifty Realty index falling roughly 4% during afternoon trading. The Diamond, Gems and Jewellery sector dropped nearly 7%, signaling a sharp investor rotation away from consumer-oriented stocks. Chemicals, automobiles, printing, and stationery stocks also faced headwinds, reflecting cautious positioning across multiple segments.
Falling crude oil prices provided the primary support for Indian equities, helping lift sentiment across two consecutive or four consecutive sessions depending on the measurement period. TradingView highlighted that improved global cues combined with easing oil prices to drive the sustained rally. Lower crude costs typically benefit India's import bill and boost corporate profit margins, supporting broader market sentiment.
Solar Industries set ambitious growth targets following its Omnia acquisition, aiming for ₹13,200 crore in revenue and over ₹1,700 crore in EBITDA by FY28. Tilaknagar Industries made an initial investment to secure a stake in Black Tiger Distilleries, while Lloyds Metals and Energy scheduled an investor meeting. These corporate developments underscored management confidence despite near-term market volatility and cautious sentiment.
