Global Communities Showcase Connection, Learning, and Service Through Diverse Events

Communities and institutions highlighted a range of events built around connection, learning and service. In West Central Saskatchewan, residents joined Terry Fox fundraisers, supported two injured miniature horses, and continued local traditions including a long-running music and dance club and the Kindersley museum’s holiday decorating initiative. In Seattle, the sold-out Taste of West Seattle raised $58,128 for the West Seattle Food Bank, which provides food and other essential assistance. An upcoming University of Massachusetts workshop invites participants to make symbolic gris gris mementos for a shared altar in artist Desmond Beach’s exhibition. NYU Shanghai’s spring semester likewise combined academic learning with industry visits, alumni discussions and community events.
NYU Shanghai students visited Xiaomi’s electric-vehicle factory in Beijing, where they toured the production facility and took a test ride, and also visited Fujifilm and the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
NYU Shanghai’s spring guest lectures included executives from H&T Co., Ltd., Tencent and Yami, as well as a session on Tesla’s AI strategy, innovation and organizational culture.
The Taste of West Seattle featured about 30 local food and drink businesses, and the West Seattle Food Bank said demand for food and basic assistance was growing. It encouraged further donations toward a $65,000 fundraising milestone.
The UMass workshop includes an artist presentation and art-sharing alongside the hands-on activity; food and supplies are first come, first served. The exhibition, The Souls of Black Folk, is scheduled to run October 2 through November 13.
