Riders' Redemption Win
Saskatchewan Roughriders Avenge Last Week's Defeat, Beat Elks 28-26 to Climb Standings.
Anonymous
The Saskatchewan Roughriders bounced back in dominant fashion on Friday, defeating the Edmonton Elks 28-26 in Week 9 of the CFL season, according to Leader-Post. The win avenges last Thursday's 36-34 loss to the same Elks squad. Saskatchewan now sits at 5-2, tightening the race at the top of the West Division. Edmonton drops to 6-2.
The rematch was anything but routine. A thunderstorm forced a delay of more than an hour before play could resume, Calgary Herald reported. When the game finally wrapped, the Riders had their revenge.
Elks Jump Out Early Before Riders Storm Back
Edmonton came out firing. The Elks scored a touchdown on their very first drive of the game, Sault Star reported. Kicker Vincent Blanchard added a field goal shortly after, pushing Edmonton's lead to 10. Saskatchewan trailed and needed a response.
The Roughriders answered with a methodical eight-play, 70-yard drive led by quarterback Trevor Harris, according to Daily Herald Tribune. The drive flipped the momentum. Saskatchewan took the lead and didn't look back from there.
Stevens Scores Twice to Seal the Comeback Win
The standout performer on the night was a Roughriders running back who found the end zone twice. His second touchdown was his seventh of the season, Sudbury Star reported. That score proved to be the decisive blow in a two-point game.
Justin Rankin also contributed offensively for Saskatchewan, Calgary Herald noted. The Riders' offense moved the ball consistently after the weather delay, grinding out enough points to hold on for the two-point victory.
West Division Race Tightens After Weekend Results
Saskatchewan's win has real implications for the West Division standings. The Riders closed the gap on first-place Edmonton with the victory. Edmonton held a two-game lead before Friday night. That cushion is now cut to just one game, Shoreline Beacon reported.
With more than half the CFL regular season still ahead, the West Division race looks wide open. A team that wins the division earns home-field advantage in the playoffs. Saskatchewan will want to keep this momentum going, Brantford Expositor noted.
Thunderstorm Interrupts Game for Over an Hour
Friday's contest was not decided on the field alone. A powerful thunderstorm rolled through the area and forced officials to pause the game. The delay lasted more than one hour, Cochrane Times Post reported. Players and fans had to wait out the storm before action resumed.
Weather delays are rare but not unheard of in the CFL. They can disrupt a team's rhythm and momentum. In this case, Saskatchewan came out of the delay sharp and ready. The Riders finished the job and walked away with the two-point win, County Market noted.
