Global Reading Scores Decline

Global student reading scores decline amid growing concerns over AI learning shortcuts.

A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has found that student performance in reading and math has declined, highlighting concerns about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to shortcut learning. The report also revealed that reading performance for American 15-year-olds hit a 25-year low, while globally, average reading scores fell by 28 points over the last decade. In the U.S., the decline from 2015 to 2025 was only seven points. However, career educator Yvette Renteria, who tested over 4,500 U.K. students, called this trend "extremely disappointing" and said educators need to address this issue. The OECD warned against allowing technology to become a distraction in the classroom or a crutch for students' learning.
