Sony Pictures Negotiates to Acquire Film Adaptation of Battlefield Franchise

The bidding war included Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal and Netflix, alongside Sony.
In 2025, Battlefield 6 outsold Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in U.S. sales—the first time a Battlefield title had outsold a Call of Duty game domestically in nearly a decade, according to TheWrap.
Battlefield 6 is set in 2027–28 and centers on a conflict between a fractured NATO and a private military company.
The film’s other named producers include EA’s Jesse Stern, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo, and Elizabeth Raposo of Outlier Society.
Sony Pictures has emerged as the frontrunner in a bidding war to acquire a live-action Battlefield film adaptation, Insider Gaming reports. The deal would pair Oscar-nominated director Christopher McQuarrie—known for the Mission: Impossible franchise—with actor and producer Michael B. Jordan, who may also star in the project.
The move comes as Battlefield 6 achieved a major milestone in 2025, outselling Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in U.S. sales for the first time in nearly a decade, TheWrap noted. The competing studios bidding for the project included Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon MGM Studios, Universal, and Netflix.
Battlefield 6's breakthrough sales performance has made the franchise suddenly hot. The game dethroned Call of Duty in the U.S. market for the first time in years, signaling strong audience demand. This success mirrors the broader wave of video game adaptations hitting theaters, with studios betting that hit games can translate into blockbuster films. Paramount is already developing a rival Call of Duty movie, raising the stakes for competing franchises.
McQuarrie brings serious credentials to the project. He directed and co-wrote the last three Mission: Impossible films, which grossed billions globally. His action expertise makes him an ideal fit for a high-octane military shooter adaptation. CBR reports that McQuarrie will write, direct, and produce the Battlefield film, giving him significant creative control over the project's vision and execution.
Jordan's involvement signals Hollywood's confidence in the project. The actor and producer will develop the film through his Outlier Society production company. While no casting details have been confirmed, Comic Basics indicates Jordan may also star in the adaptation, adding another layer of star power. He joins producers EA's Jesse Stern, Carter Swan of Emerald Neon, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo.
The source material gives filmmakers plenty to work with. Battlefield 6 is set in 2027–28 and centers on a conflict between a fractured NATO alliance and a private military company. This near-future scenario provides opportunities for complex geopolitical tension and large-scale action sequences. No official release date or full cast has been announced, but production timelines typically suggest a theater release within 2–3 years.
