Apple plans a global retail store redesign bringing back dedicated Genius Bars and removing video walls.

Apple already restored a dedicated Genius Bar at its redesigned Tysons Corner store in 2023. The location is notable because it was the site of Apple’s first retail store, which opened in 2001.
The new Avenue concepts are expected to occupy dedicated 10-foot sections along store walls. The pickup bay reportedly includes an Apple logo above its secured order drawers, while the Today at Apple bay is designed with an oversized display and equipment drawers.
The reported renovations would also extend beyond customer-facing areas: back-of-house spaces and employee break rooms are expected to be updated at many locations.
The large video walls were part of the next-generation store concept introduced during Angela Ahrendts’s tenure leading Apple retail from 2014 to 2019; their removal represents a retreat from that community-focused design era.
Apple is speeding up renovations across its global retail stores and pulling back on new store openings. The redesign brings back dedicated Genius Bars with wood finishes and two counter heights for easier access iTechPost. The company is removing large video walls that once dominated store layouts, reclaiming that space for customer service ChannelNews.
New wooden bays for online order pickup and Today at Apple classes are being built into store walls along dedicated 10-foot sections BBNTimes. Back-of-house spaces and employee break rooms are also getting updates at many locations PhoneArena. Apple has not yet announced a full list of stores or a timeline for the rollout.
Apple's first retail store opened in Tysons Corner in 2001 with a dedicated service counter. The company recently redesigned that same location in 2023, restoring a full Genius Bar as a preview of the new direction iTechPost. The bars will feature all-wood construction and two different counter heights to serve customers standing and sitting ChannelNews.
The Genius Bars include integrated storage and product displays built directly into the counter design BBNTimes. This represents a major shift back toward hands-on service after years of de-emphasizing that part of the retail experience TBreak.
Apple introduced giant video walls during Angela Ahrendts's leadership from 2014 to 2019 TBreak. Those walls pushed a community-focused design but are now being removed from many stores BBNTimes. The space they occupy is being converted into areas for customer service and product pickup.
Two new dedicated bays are replacing the video walls. Online order pickup areas include secure drawers marked with an Apple logo and handoff tables ChannelNews. Today at Apple education bays feature equipment storage, instructor tables, displays and stools PhoneArena.
Rather than expand its footprint, Apple is shifting focus to updating stores it already operates ChannelNews. The company is accelerating renovation timelines across its global network PhoneArena. This strategy suggests Apple sees more value in deepening service at current locations than opening new ones.
Beyond the customer-facing redesigns, Apple is also updating employee spaces iTechPost. Break rooms and back-of-house areas at many locations are being refreshed as part of the broader overhaul BBNTimes. Apple has not yet disclosed which stores will be renovated first or when the changes will roll out.
