Sydney Airport Under Scrutiny Following Fourth Near-Miss Incident in 2026

Sydney Airport is under scrutiny following a series of runway incidents and near-collisions that occurred at the airport in the past three months. The incidents, which involved passenger aircraft, began on July 27 when a Qantas Boeing 737 was cleared to cross a runway in front of a QardasLink Dash 8 landing. On Aug. 9, a Jetstar Airbus A320 was forced to brake abruptly to avoid a Qatar Airways Boeing 777, causing a flight attendant to fall and fracture her wrist. Staffing levels at Sydney Airport’s control tower have been a recurring issue of inquiry, raising concerns about fatigue and staff resourcing pressures within the tower. The airport has stated that safety is its highest priority and will support the Minister and Air Services as they investigate the findings.
