Jio Financial and Allianz Inject ₹640 Crore Into General Insurance Joint Venture

Industry sources said Deepak Shankar was being considered as Jio Allianz General Insurance’s first CEO, but the insurer had not officially announced the appointment. The company had applied to IRDAI for a licence.
The rights issue allotted each partner 32,00,50,000 shares with a face value of ₹10 each, issued for cash at par.
Jio Financial’s initial subscription to the venture was ₹4.95 crore for 49.5 lakh shares, giving it a 50% stake. The venture was formed to offer general insurance, including health insurance, in India, subject to regulatory approvals.
Allianz Jio Reinsurance, Jio Financial’s separate 50:50 reinsurance venture with Allianz, underwrote ₹266 crore in gross written premiums in its first full quarter of operations, Q1 FY27.
Jio Financial Services and Allianz Europe have each pumped ₹320.05 crore into their 50:50 general insurance joint venture, Jio Allianz General Insurance, through a rights issue totaling ₹640.1 crore. Inc42 reported the capital infusion will fuel the insurer's business operations as it prepares to offer general and health insurance in India.
Jio Financial's total investment in the venture now stands at ₹375 crore. TradingView noted that each partner received 32,00,50,000 shares with a face value of ₹10 each, issued at par. The transaction qualifies as an arm's-length related-party deal requiring no government or regulatory approvals.
The ₹640 crore capital raise marks a major step for Jio Allianz General Insurance as it gears up for India's competitive insurance market. Moneycontrol confirmed both partners committed equal stakes in the 50:50 joint venture. Jio Financial had seeded the venture with an initial ₹4.95 crore investment for 49.5 lakh shares, establishing a foundation for the 50% ownership stake.
The fresh capital will support underwriting and operational costs as the company awaits final approval from India's insurance regulator, the IRDAI. HDFC Sky reported the venture was structured to offer both general insurance and health insurance products once licenses are granted. No regulatory or government approvals were needed for this capital infusion.
Industry sources flagged Deepak Shankar as a leading candidate for Jio Allianz General Insurance's first chief executive role, though Asia Insurance Post noted the company had not formally announced the appointment. The insurer continues pursuing its IRDAI license to begin underwriting policies.
Meanwhile, Jio Allianz Reinsurance — the partners' separate 50:50 reinsurance venture — is already operating. Asia Insurance Post reported the reinsurer underwrote ₹266 crore in gross written premiums during its first full quarter of operations in Q1 FY27. The strong start signals early market confidence in the Jio-Allianz partnership.
The ₹640 crore investment represents Allianz Europe's deepest commitment to India's insurance sector through a local partnership. By pairing with Jio Financial — part of Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries empire — the German insurer gains access to Jio's vast customer base and distribution network across India.
India's general insurance market is growing faster than the global average. The partnership allows Allianz to compete in health, auto, and property insurance with backing from one of India's largest financial services groups. Success here could expand Allianz's footprint across South Asia.
