FBI Renews Search for Missing Ex-Firefighter Accused of Federal Crimes

The FBI has renewed its search for Charles Johnathen Harris, a former Alameda County firefighter and paramedic who may have staged his disappearance to avoid federal prosecution. Harris was indicted in March 2023 on a charge of possessing child sexual abuse material; prosecutors alleged he uploaded images to Kik, including while at fire stations, and he faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Weeks after his indictment, he reportedly disappeared when his boat capsized in Suisun Bay, and his body was never recovered. Investigators have cited unanswered questions, including a missing boat plug, and say the circumstances warrant scrutiny, though the FBI has not publicly detailed what prompted its renewed suspicions. Harris failed to appear in court and has an active federal arrest warrant; authorities are asking the public for information about his whereabouts.
The federal investigation began after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Harris surrendered to authorities on March 7, 2023, and was released on bond with restrictions on his internet access.
The boating incident occurred in reported winds of about 20 mph and water temperatures in the low 50s. Harris’s brother, the only witness identified in the East Bay Times report, swam to safety.
The FBI says Harris may also use the names Chuck Harris or Charlie Harris. It describes him as 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 220 pounds, with red hair, blue eyes and light burn scars on his hands.
Legal analyst Steven Clark warned that anyone who harbors Harris or helps him evade authorities could face a federal felony carrying up to five years in prison.
