Malibu Sinkhole Swallows Driveway and Forces Evacuation of 31 Homes

In Malibu, 31 homes were red-tagged and evacuated after a sinkhole opened at actor Nicolas Cage's beachfront home, threatening the integrity of nearby structures. The city declared a state of emergency and issued an evacuation order for the properties due to hazardous conditions and loss of access for fire and sheriff’s personnel. Southern California Gas Co. shut off gas service to address a gas leak at the property and prevent further leaks. The American Red Cross established a temporary shelter at Malibu High School. In Long Beach, residents were allowed to return to their homes after city building inspectors completed assessments. Meanwhile, in Orange County, truckloads of boulders were placed along a stretch of beach after several homes were deemed uninhabitable, with one partially collapsing into the sea.
