Indian police are planning to question Google over a lack of safeguards after breaking up a criminal network that managed over 500,000 fake Gmail accounts to send hoax bomb threats to government offices. The police in the western state of Gujarat have arrested two individuals and uncovered 513,847 Gmail IDs and passwords being used since 2022. The scale of the fake Gmail account use is unprecedented, according to Vivek Bheda, a senior cybercrime official of the Gujarat police. Each fraudulent account used two-factor authentication, an extra security step Google provides to keep accounts safe. The investigation began after a bomb threat email was received by the state government days before the recent New Delhi summit of the BRICS grouping.
