ScotRail's New Ticketing App Launch Beset by Technical Glitches and Delays

Key Points
1
Password reset emails often arrived after long delays, with some users waiting over an hour and, in other reports, up to about 90 minutes to access the new app.
2
A morning of network disruption accompanied the rollout, including a signal fault that disrupted services between Airdrie and Caldercruix, with Milngavie–Edinburgh and Helensburgh–Edinburgh services affected.
3
Data migration problems meant railcards and payment details did not transfer to the new system, forcing users to re-enter payment details and link Railcards separately.
4
ScotRail advised a temporary workaround by encouraging customers to continue using the old app to purchase tickets until midday while issues were resolved.
5
Edinburgh Waverley was sometimes labeled simply as 'Edinburgh' in the app, contributing confusion for travelers in a city with multiple stations.
ScotRail apologised after the launch of its new ticketing app on Monday descended into chaos, leaving commuters unable to buy tickets on the first day. Password reset emails took up to 90 minutes to arrive, payment details failed to transfer, and searches on both the app and website refused to show available journeys, according to Deadline News and Glasgow Times.
The new platform replaced the Trainline-backed system ScotRail had used previously. ScotRail initially told customers the old app could no longer be used — then reversed that stance, urging users to switch back temporarily until the problems were fixed, Dumbarton Reporter reported.
Passwords, Railcards, and Payment Details All Failed
From the moment the new app went live, users hit a wall of technical problems. Password reset emails were the first hurdle — many waited over an hour, with some reports citing delays of up to 90 minutes, according to Glasgow Times. Without resetting passwords, customers simply could not log in at all.
Data migration also failed. Railcards and saved payment details did not carry over from the old system. That meant users had to re-enter card details and link Railcards from scratch. ScotRail advised customers to keep using the old app to buy tickets until at least midday while technical teams worked on a fix, Dumbarton Reporter noted.
Station Names Wrong and Search Results Missing
Even users who managed to log in faced more problems. Journey searches failed to return results on both the new app and the ScotRail website. One specific bug listed Edinburgh Waverley simply as 'Edinburgh,' causing confusion in a city that has multiple stations, according to Deadline News.
Commuters vented their frustration on social media, with many calling the rollout a 'shambles.' The criticism was widespread and swift. ScotRail said it was working with its technical teams to resolve every issue, but gave no firm timeline for a full fix, Yahoo News UK reported.
Signal Fault Added to a Chaotic Morning on the Network
The app disaster was not the only problem commuters faced that morning. A signal fault disrupted services between Airdrie and Caldercruix. That knocked out Milngavie–Edinburgh and Helensburgh–Edinburgh services, hitting two of ScotRail's busiest cross-city routes, according to Deadline News.
The combination of train delays and a broken ticketing system left many travellers with nowhere to turn. Those who could not use the new app, could not get through on the old one, and faced disrupted trains had few good options. It compounded what was already a deeply frustrating morning across the network.
ScotRail Apologises but Offers Few Firm Answers
ScotRail issued a public apology but was short on specifics. The operator said it was working with its technical teams to resolve the issues as quickly as possible. It urged affected customers to continue using the old app where they could, SSB Crack News reported.
The reversal on the old app was notable. ScotRail had initially said the Trainline-backed system was no longer available. It then walked that back and told users to rely on it as a temporary workaround. The episode raised questions about how thoroughly the new platform was tested before it went live, according to Yahoo News UK.
