Stellantis Sells Free2Move Car-Sharing to Mutares in Strategy to Focus on Core Brands

Stellantis has agreed to sell its Free2Move car-sharing business to Mutares, a German private equity firm, according to Yahoo Finance. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, though financial terms were not disclosed.
The move is part of a broader push by Stellantis — the maker of Fiat, Peugeot, and Jeep — to exit businesses it sees as unprofitable and sharpen its focus on core brands and markets.
Stellantis is selling its entire shareholding in Free2Move to Mutares SE & Co. KGaA, Bloomberg Law reported. Free2Move is a car-sharing service the automaker built up over recent years. The business has not been profitable, pushing Stellantis to find a buyer.
The deal is set to wrap up by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approvals, according to Yahoo Finance. No price tag for the sale has been made public so far.
Mutares is a Munich-based private equity holding company. It buys struggling or non-core businesses from large corporations, fixes them up, and looks to grow them. Taking on Free2Move fits squarely into that playbook, according to Financial Content.
Free2Move operates as a shared mobility platform, letting users rent cars by the minute or hour. Under Mutares, the business would no longer be tied to Stellantis' corporate structure or budget pressures.
Stellantis has been under pressure to improve its financial performance. Selling off non-core units like Free2Move is part of its strategy to get leaner. The company has flagged a need to focus resources on its main vehicle brands and key markets, Bloomberg Law reported.
This sale follows a pattern seen across the auto industry. Major carmakers are pulling back from mobility services and ride-sharing ventures that have struggled to turn a profit. Stellantis is choosing to concentrate on what it knows best: making and selling cars.
The transition to Mutares ownership is not expected to happen overnight. The deal still needs to go through regulatory review before it can be finalized, according to Yahoo Finance. That process is expected to take through the rest of 2025 and into 2026.
It remains unclear how the sale will affect Free2Move's day-to-day operations, employees, or service availability for users. Stellantis and Mutares have not released details on those plans yet.
