Net interest income for Q2 2026 was $17.3 million, up $0.2 million from the prior quarter; net interest margin (NIM) was 4.16%, up from 4.07% in Q1 2026 and 3.89% in the prior-year quarter.
Loans declined by $37.8 million (2.6%) and deposits declined by $30.1 million (2.0%), while investments increased by $25.4 million (12.0%) compared with the prior quarter.
Credit quality remained an area to watch, with non-performing assets to total loans rising to 0.53% in Q2 2026 from 0.35% in the prior-year quarter.
Hawthorn remained well capitalized, with total risk-based capital reported at 16.40%.
Hawthorn Bancshares posted a strong second quarter in 2026, reporting net income of $7.3 million — a jump of $1.58 million, or 27.6%, from the prior quarter, according to Goldea Capital. Diluted earnings per share came in at $1.06, with return on assets at 1.63% and return on equity at 16.39%.
The Missouri-based bank holding company also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.21 per common share, payable October 1, 2026, to shareholders of record September 15, 2026, Investing.com reported. Shares of HWBK traded near $38.70 at midday on July 29, 2026, close to their 12-month high of $40.36.
Net interest income — the money a bank earns from loans minus what it pays on deposits — rose to $17.3 million in Q2 2026, up $0.2 million from Q1, according to Yahoo Finance. The net interest margin hit 4.16%, up from 4.07% last quarter and 3.89% a year ago. That steady climb shows the bank is earning more from its assets over time.
The efficiency ratio came in at 60.66%. That means the bank spent about 61 cents to earn every dollar of revenue. Lower is better, and 60.66% is a solid reading for a community bank. Book value per share rose to $26.50, up 4.2% from Q1 and 17.6% from a year ago, per Goldea Capital.
Loans fell by $37.8 million, or 2.6%, from the prior quarter. Deposits dropped by $30.1 million, or 2.0%, over the same period, Daily Tribune reported. Both declines point to a slower lending environment heading into the second half of 2026.
At the same time, investments grew by $25.4 million, or 12.0%, quarter-over-quarter. The bank appears to be shifting money out of loans and into securities. That changes the mix of assets on the balance sheet and could affect earnings if loan demand picks up later in the year.
Non-performing assets as a share of total loans rose to 0.53% in Q2 2026, up from 0.35% in the same quarter a year ago. That ratio measures loans that are no longer being paid on time. The increase is modest but bears watching as interest rates stay elevated and borrowers feel more pressure.
Still, Hawthorn remained well capitalized. Total risk-based capital stood at 16.40%, well above the regulatory minimum that defines a well-capitalized bank. A strong capital buffer gives the bank room to absorb losses and continue paying dividends without stress, per Goldea Capital.
External analysts rated HWBK as Outperform following the results, pointing to a strong earnings recovery and an impending acquisition as reasons to be bullish. The stock's price-earnings ratio sits near 10.63, which is low compared with many regional bank peers. Its beta of 0.44 means the stock moves far less than the broader market.
The quarterly dividend of $0.21 per share works out to an annualized yield of about 2.2%, according to Watchlist News. With a market capitalization of roughly $266.9 million and a 12-month low of $28.10, the stock has already gained significant ground — and analysts suggest the acquisition could push it further.
