ABB India deploys advanced electrification solutions across Kolkata Metro's 72-km network, enhancing safety and efficiency

ABB India has completed a sweeping upgrade of the 72-km Kolkata Metro network, deploying advanced electrification and motion-control technology across stations, tunnels, and critical facilities. The project delivers average energy savings of 25% and covers key corridors including Sealdah–Phoolbagan, Joka–Majerhat, and the Airport Blue Line routes, according to ET Infra.
Kolkata Metro is India's first metro system, launched in 1984. ABB has been its technology partner for over 25 years. The Swiss-Swedish engineering giant now claims its solutions run in more than 80% of all Indian metro rail networks, per Fortune India.
ABB installed low- and medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) at stations including Shahid Khudiram and Jai Hind Bimanbandar. GIS units seal electrical components in gas rather than open air, making them far more compact. That matters in Kolkata, where underground stations have little spare space. ABB also fitted distribution boards and lightning protection systems across the network, according to ET Infra.
ABB Motion's HVAC-dedicated packaged drives control ventilation and cooling across the network. In plain terms, these are devices that vary a motor's speed to match actual demand rather than running it flat out all the time. That alone saves roughly 25% of the energy used for air handling. In a fire emergency, the same drives switch to smoke extraction mode, ScanX reported.
ABB's relationship with Kolkata Metro stretches back to around 2001. The network has grown from 28 km to 72 km since then — a journey that took decades due to land acquisition and utility-shifting delays. Today the metro runs more than 300 train trips every day and carries over 500,000 passengers, per ET Infra.
Kiran Dutt, President of Electrification at ABB India, tied the project to a bigger national push. "As India accelerates its journey toward low-carbon, smart urban transit, the need for highly efficient and intelligent solutions has never been more urgent," he said. ABB manufactures over 85% of its products locally, in line with the government's Make in India programme, according to Sahi Markets.
Kolkata Metro's expansion is far from finished. Official projections show an additional 19 km coming online by end of 2026, pushing the network toward a 130-km target in the coming years, per Wonderslate. A further 57 km of routes are already sanctioned. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced 60 next-generation train rakes for the system in June 2026, according to NBM&CW.
Analysts say the 72-km upgrade acts as a technical blueprint for those future corridors. The Gas-Insulated Switchgear and variable-frequency drives tested here are expected to be replicated on the upcoming Orange Line and Beleghata Airport link to keep the whole system compatible, according to Whalesbook.
ABB India entered 2026 with an order backlog of ₹11,094 crore, giving the company strong revenue visibility. Investors reacted positively to the Kolkata milestone. But analysts at Whalesbook warned that input costs — particularly copper and steel — and foreign exchange swings could squeeze profit margins on large fixed-price infrastructure contracts.
There are also operational gaps to watch. Government data cited by Fortune India shows some Green Line sections ran at well below designed capacity before the Esplanade–Sealdah link opened in August 2025. Technology upgrades help, but ridership growth still depends on completing the corridors that connect where people actually live and work.
