Brooklyn Man Dies After Bag Gets Trapped in Subway Train Doors

A man in his 50s was killed during Monday’s evening rush hour after his bag became trapped in the closing doors of an A train at Brooklyn’s Utica Avenue station. As the train pulled away, he was dragged onto the tracks and pronounced dead at the scene. Reports differ on whether he was boarding or exiting and on the precise sequence of events. Police said no criminality is suspected, and the MTA is investigating. Authorities had not consistently released the victim’s identity in initial reports.
A similar fatal incident occurred in October 2022, when a 20-year-old New Jersey man died after his clothing or backpack became caught in a subway train door at Columbus Circle.
One report said the victim was dragged down the platform and struck a pole, suffering severe trauma before he died.
Police said the train motorman stopped it after realizing what had happened; the victim was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m.
Accounts differed on the victim’s reported name and age: CBS identified him as Way Boahene, 57, while the Daily News called him Yaw Boahene, 49, and reported that he lived in the Bronx.
