The rebound did not erase all the damage. SK Hynix had fallen roughly 58% from its June 25 peak before the surge. Analysts cautioned that the rally reflected technical market forces more than a genuine earnings recovery.
The catalyst was simple: US tech stocks rallied hard overnight, and short sellers panicked. Short selling means betting a stock will fall. When prices jump instead, those sellers must buy shares quickly to cut their losses. That rush of forced buying pushed SK Hynix and Samsung to their daily price limits, according to Zoom Bangla iNews. The KOSPI's 18% gain was the biggest single-day move in the index's history.
Before the squeeze, SK Hynix's slide had already caused chaos. On July 13, the stock dropped 15% in one day. That triggered forced selling in leveraged ETFs — funds that use borrowed money to amplify bets. About $5 billion left those ETFs, making up roughly 18% of SK Hynix's total trading volume that day.
Strong earnings from Amazon and Microsoft gave investors a reason to buy Korean chips again. Both companies signaled they would keep spending heavily on AI infrastructure. That boosted hopes for memory chip demand, since AI data centers need massive amounts of the chips that SK Hynix and Samsung make, according to GuruFocus and CNBC.
The optimism spread beyond the two giants. LG Innotek and Seoul Semiconductor also rallied sharply, suggesting broader confidence in Korea's chip sector. By July 31, SK Hynix and Samsung were up over 20% again in a follow-on session, according to Seoul Daily. The SOXX US semiconductor ETF also rose more than 8% alongside the Korea rally.
The volatility cut both ways. On July 28 and 29, the Korea Exchange triggered circuit breakers two days in a row for the first time in its history. A circuit breaker is a temporary trading halt that kicks in when prices move too fast. The back-to-back triggers came during a sharp Asia-wide semiconductor sell-off that produced a 10.84% single-day drop on July 28.
Part of the earlier slide was driven by fear. Investors worried that Chinese memory chipmakers were closing the technology gap with Korean rivals. That fear pushed sellers into the market hard and fast, creating the conditions for the violent short squeeze that followed when sentiment shifted.
Despite the record moves, experts urged caution. The KOSPI remained well below its June peak even after the surge. The rally looked more like a positioning squeeze than a sign of real earnings strength, analysts said. Short squeezes can reverse just as fast as they develop when the forced buying stops.
GuruFocus flagged a specific warning sign: the SOXX semiconductor ETF appeared roughly 50% overvalued based on GF Value metrics. That signal suggested the AI chip trade had run far ahead of actual fundamentals. Investors piling into the sector at current prices faced significant risk of a correction if earnings failed to catch up with expectations.
