Stephen Graham delivers powerful performances in intense television dramas streaming across platforms.

Stephen Graham is drawing renewed attention for a range of intense television roles. The 2019 Channel 4 drama The Virtues stars him as Joseph, a man who returns to Ireland after personal turmoil and is forced to confront traumatic memories from his past; critics particularly praised Graham’s performance. He also appears in the gripping crime drama Save Me, created by and starring Lennie James, about a father searching for his estranged daughter after she disappears. Graham plays Nelly’s close friend Melon, whose importance grows as the search takes a darker turn.
In The Virtues, Joseph turns to alcohol after his former partner and their son emigrate to Australia; once he has almost run out of money, he returns to Ireland and tries to reunite with his sister Anna, whom he has not seen for 30 years.
The Virtues is a four-part Channel 4 drama written and directed by Shane Meadows, who co-wrote it with Jack Thorne; Meadows said the series was partly inspired by a moment from his own childhood.
In Save Me, Nelly is accused of abducting his estranged 13-year-old daughter Jody, although he says he has not seen her in a decade. After persuading police he is not responsible for her disappearance, he sets out to search for her himself.
Stephen Graham’s Save Me character is Fabio “Melon” Melonzola. The article says the drama was praised for sidestepping familiar missing-child-story clichés, and notes that the story continues 17 months after the first series.
