Australia all-rounder Cameron Green is expected to miss the upcoming Test opener against South Africa.

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green is likely to miss the first Test against South Africa as he recovers from an abdominal strain sustained in the teams’ recent ODI series. Green did not bat, bowl or field in Australia’s warm-up match and has only done light conditioning, though he has not been officially ruled out; a return in the second or third Test is possible. His absence would open a place for Beau Webster and put Cooper Connolly or Matthew Renshaw in contention, while Sam Harper and Nic Maddinson are also available as injury cover. Former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson has argued that Connolly or Renshaw should rank ahead of Maddinson because they were selected in the original squad.
Green’s abdominal injury was sustained while playing a hook shot in the third ODI against South Africa.
Green had also been carrying a sore shoulder during the recent ODI series, which limited his bowling workload; the new strain affects his batting, bowling and fielding.
Green had scored a Test century against Bangladesh in Darwin and was among the standout batters in that series alongside Steve Smith.
Marnus Labuschagne scored 111 from 76 balls in the warm-up, ending an 11-month century drought and strengthening his claim to Australia’s No. 3 spot.
Australia and South Africa entered the series first and second in the World Test Championship standings, respectively, making the series important to their positions in the current cycle.
