DoorDash Launches AI Text Ordering Assistant Beta for U.S. iPhone Users

The early test is limited to 20,000 U.S. customers, and the feature currently works through Apple Messages; DoorDash has not said whether Android support is planned.
DoorDash says the assistant may proactively text customers about recurring habits—for example, asking in the morning whether they want their usual coffee order.
DoorDash says nearly half of restaurant orders placed through its in-app Ask DoorDash assistant went to restaurants customers had not tried before.
At Dash Forward, DoorDash also unveiled DoorDash Air, a purpose-built drone delivery system being piloted in Northern California with partners including Chipotle, Popeyes and San Francisco restaurant Momo N Curry.
DoorDash is testing an AI assistant that lets customers order food by text message instead of opening the app. Users can describe what they want—like
order my usual protein bowl
—and the AI searches nearby restaurants, builds a cart, and completes checkout in the message thread ExtremeTech. The beta is limited to 20,000 U.S. iPhone users and marks an expansion of the company's in-app AI ordering tool that launched earlier this year Entrepreneur.
The AI remembers past orders and can show dish photos to help customers decide MakeUseOf. It builds shopping carts and handles checkout without leaving the messages app. The system also supports group orders and grocery shopping, including routine restocks and product swaps to find cheaper alternatives CustomerExperienceDive.
DoorDash says the assistant can proactively text customers about their regular habits. For example, it might text in the morning asking if they want their usual coffee order Phandroid. This puts ordering into the customer's most-used app rather than forcing them to switch applications.
DoorDash's existing Ask DoorDash assistant—which launched earlier this year inside the app—has already shown success. According to the company, nearly half of all restaurant orders placed through the in-app assistant went to restaurants customers had never tried before ExtremeTech. The text feature extends that discovery capability into messaging.
At its Dash Forward event, DoorDash also unveiled DoorDash Air, a purpose-built drone delivery system now piloted in Northern California Entrepreneur. Partners include Chipotle, Popeyes, and San Francisco restaurant Momo N Curry. The company has not yet announced plans to bring text ordering to Android devices.
