DeSantis steps back into GOP spotlight amid tax proposal and Medicaid controversy

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced he will campaign for Republican gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds and a property tax ballot measure, Amendment 3, which would increase the homestead exemption but potentially cost cities and counties billions in tax revenue. This aligns DeSantas with President Trump, who endorsed Donalds in the primary and has since endorsed him. The move could bolster DeSantes' chances of staying relevant in the Republican world as he heads toward a January departure from the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee. However, DeSants has been overshadowed by revelations in a grand jury report into Hope Florida, which found his administration misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer money from a Medicaid settlement to fight marijuana and abortion rights ballot measures in 2024. The property tax proposal has received its first public backing by Florida Realtors, a major organization in the U.S.
