Multiple Pedestrian and Traffic Crashes Leave Four Dead Across North America

Pedestrian and road-user crashes were reported in California, Nevada, Ontario and South Dakota. In California, Cesar Navarro, 52, died after being struck by an SUV on Highway 18 in Lucerne Valley on Sept. 24; a man died after being hit while crossing Broadway in San Diego late Sept. 23; and Douglas Vargas, 65, was killed near Maricopa Avenue and 23rd Street in Richmond on Sept. 24. In Rapid City, a man died after being struck while crossing outside a crosswalk. Later reports also described two Monday crashes in the Henderson area that injured pedestrians, a Sunday two-vehicle crash in Brampton that left one person in life-threatening condition, and a Saturday Ottawa collision that seriously injured a 74-year-old pedestrian. Police were investigating the incidents, and Ottawa police sought witnesses or video.
In Henderson, one Monday-evening crash was reported at about 5:56 p.m. at South Green Valley Parkway and East Warm Springs Road; the pedestrian’s identity and condition were not released, and eastbound Warm Springs Road was closed at the intersection.
A separate Monday-morning crash near Flamingo and Las Vegas Boulevard, close to the Strip, left a pedestrian with serious injuries. Police said it was not yet known whether the injuries were life-threatening and closed the intersection during their investigation.
In the Brampton crash, both vehicles remained at the scene; Queen Street was closed westbound between Dixie Road and West Drive while police investigated.
Ottawa paramedics assessed the driver after the collision, but the driver was not taken to hospital; the injured pedestrian was taken to Ottawa Civic Hospital.
The Rapid City crash occurred in the 1400 block of West Omaha Street at about 8:40 p.m. The man was taken to hospital and later died; police had not released his name.
