Alabama Mother Charged With Murder After Daughter Dies From Severe Neglect

An Alabama mother, Leslie Denise Wilson, is charged with murder in the death of her 12-year-old daughter, who had cerebral palsy and relied on a feeding tube. Investigators allege the girl endured severe physical and medical neglect for more than a month before her death on June 17; police said she weighed 32 pounds and was malnourished, dehydrated, ill with pneumonia, and had live maggots in her diaper. Authorities allege Wilson left the child in the care of her younger siblings despite inadequate food in the home. Testimony at a court hearing indicated the death was ruled a homicide, with sepsis cited as the cause. Wilson is being held without bond, and Alabama’s Department of Human Resources is also investigating.
Police initially responded to the home after receiving a report that the child had died of natural causes; the investigation later led authorities to treat the death as a crime.
Wilson was arrested and booked into the Etowah County Jail on Monday, and a hearing under Aniah’s Law resulted in her being held without bond.
The criminal complaint alleges the neglect occurred from May 1 until June 17 and says Wilson “did torture, willfully mistreat, cruelly beat or otherwise willfully mistreat” her daughter.
The child’s next court appearance was not yet scheduled in the Etowah County docket; one report said Wilson’s case was scheduled to return to court on Oct. 28.
