McKesson’s extension covers pharmaceutical distribution to CVS mail-order and specialty pharmacies, retail pharmacies and distribution centers.
McKesson CEO Brian Tyler said the companies have worked together for more than 25 years to provide services to patients and communities, and described the extension as building on that relationship.
Cardinal Health secured a major win on Wednesday, signing a binding agreement to extend its drug distribution contract with CVS Health through June 2032. The deal keeps the current scope of services in place and resolves uncertainty around one of Cardinal's largest customer relationships. Yahoo Finance reported that Cardinal's stock rose 3.7% after the announcement, and the company reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings-per-share growth outlook of 13% to 15%.
The extension delivers long-term visibility for Cardinal, which operates with thin profit margins and a leveraged balance sheet. Cardinal CEO Jason Hollar said the company values its "long-standing CVS partnership" and looks forward to combining capabilities to serve CVS customers. The deal does not materially change Cardinal's economics, the company said.
Cardinal is not alone in securing CVS continuity. McKesson, the other major pharmaceutical distributor, also announced an extension of its CVS partnership through June 2032. The McKesson deal covers pharmaceutical distribution to CVS mail-order and specialty pharmacies, retail pharmacies, and distribution centers. McKesson CEO Brian Tyler said the companies have worked together for more than 25 years and described the extension as building on that relationship.
Cardinal reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings-per-share target of $12.40 to $12.60 per share, alongside its long-term growth outlook of 12% to 14% annually. The company also maintained its fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS growth guidance of 13% to 15%. Analysts viewed both the Cardinal and McKesson extensions as easing uncertainty for the distributor sector after months of negotiation risk.
The nine-year extension gives Cardinal clearer revenue visibility, but structural challenges persist. The pharmaceutical distribution business operates on razor-thin margins and faces constant pressure from pricing negotiations with customers and manufacturers. Cardinal's highly leveraged balance sheet leaves it exposed to fluctuations in operating costs, drug pricing changes, and operational disruptions. The CVS deal, while positive, does not insulate the company from these underlying sector pressures.
