Tripura Expands Higher Education With New Buddhist And Women's Universities

At Tripura University’s 40th Foundation Day, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the institution could become a leading center for higher education and research in the Northeast, urging stronger industry-academia partnerships, interdisciplinary research, innovation and international collaboration. He said Tripura’s cultural heritage, indigenous knowledge, biodiversity and geography offer opportunities for research, and emphasized connecting education to society’s needs, including preparing students for emerging fields such as AI and digital technology. The state has expanded higher education since 2018 by establishing seven government degree colleges, approving four private universities and advancing plans for a government women’s university and a state technical university. Saha also pointed to scholarship and other support for students, while business leaders called for greater attention to training IT professionals; five institutional agreements were signed to support academic, entrepreneurship and industry initiatives.
The state’s higher-education expansion also includes the Dharma Deepa International Buddhist University, which Saha said could promote Buddhist studies, peace, compassion and global academic exchange; Mata Tripureshwari Open University in Udaipur began academic activities in the 2025–26 session.
Saha cited specific student-support measures: 20 Divyangjan students received special scholarships in the past year, while the Lakshya scheme and expanded scholarships support students preparing for competitive exams, including the UPSC. Tripura is also implementing the National Education Policy 2020, with emphasis on multidisciplinary learning, flexibility and skill development.
The state was recruiting academic staff to support higher education: the Tripura Public Service Commission had recommended 74 assistant professors for appointment in the first phase, recruitment for another 126 posts was underway, and approval had been received for 200 additional posts.
Saha said education should help build character and produce responsible, service-minded citizens, not simply impart knowledge. He also noted that Tripura University was established in 1987 and became a Central University through a Parliamentary Bill in 2007.
