UnitedHealth Shares Fall 3% as TPG Acquires Stake in Florida Clinics

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, leaving investors without a headline valuation for the interest sold to TPG.
UnitedHealth CFO Wayne DeVeydt said the TPG partnership could help accelerate the Florida clinic footprint; UnitedHealth is currently opening about 15 clinics a year in the state.
Optum Health’s 2025 revenue fell 3% to $102 billion, while UnitedHealth’s total net earnings declined to less than $12.1 billion from $14.4 billion in 2024—financial pressure that provides context for the broader turnaround.
WellMed, which focuses on care for older adults, was acquired by Optum in 2011, placing the Florida clinics within a long-standing UnitedHealth business relationship rather than a newly built operation.
TPG has prior experience with an Optum asset: it previously acquired Optum UK, including EMIS Group, a healthcare software company used by the United Kingdom’s National Health Service.
UnitedHealth Group sold a stake in its Florida WellMed senior-care clinics to private-equity firm TPG, a move aimed at boosting operations as the health insurer navigates margin pressures. Yahoo Finance reported that UnitedHealth's shares fell about 3% after the deal was announced, reflecting investor concerns even as the company seeks a turnaround partner.
The clinics will stay within Optum's network while TPG provides local expertise, technology investments, and operational support. CFO Wayne DeVeydt said Optum Health margins could reach 2% in 2025 and 4% in 2026—a turnaround target underscored by declining 2025 revenue of $102 billion, down 3% from the prior year.
UnitedHealth did not need the money from this sale. Instead, Becker's ASC noted the company sought a partner capable of working closely with the clinics as Optum Health undergoes a broader turnaround. The move signals deeper operational challenges than a simple fundraising exercise.
Optum Health's 2025 net earnings fell to less than $12.1 billion from $14.4 billion in 2024, adding urgency to the turnaround. UnitedHealth is currently opening about 15 clinics a year in Florida, making the state a key growth area for the senior-care business.
WellMed, which focuses on care for older adults, was acquired by Optum back in 2011. The Florida clinics are therefore part of a long-standing UnitedHealth business relationship, not a newly built operation being sold off for the first time.
TPG is not new to Optum partnerships. The private-equity firm previously acquired Optum UK, including EMIS Group, a healthcare software company used by the United Kingdom's National Health Service. That experience positions TPG as an operator familiar with Optum's systems and culture.
UnitedHealth did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction, leaving investors without a headline valuation for the stake sold to TPG. That lack of transparency may explain part of the 3% stock decline—markets dislike surprises and missing data.
