HMRC Urges New Workers to Download Free App to Manage Tax and Avoid Mistakes.

HMRC is urging new workers to download its free app before their first day on the job, warning that skipping this simple step could lead to avoidable tax mistakes. The alert comes as thousands of students finish university and begin applying for graduate schemes, apprenticeships, and full-time roles this summer, according to Liverpool Echo.
The tax authority calls the app "the quickest and easiest way" to manage your tax affairs from day one, Wales Online reported. It is free to download and works on both iOS and Android devices.
The app gives new workers instant access to several key features. Users can view their National Insurance number on the spot — no need to dig out old paperwork. They can also see how much tax has been taken from their pay and check their full employment history going back five years, according to Daily Post.
The app also lets users estimate their take-home pay after Income Tax and National Insurance are deducted. National Insurance is a tax on earnings that funds state benefits like the NHS. First-time workers often get caught off guard by these deductions, so knowing the numbers ahead of time can prevent nasty surprises on payday, Lancs Live reported.
Beyond pay checks, the app covers a range of other tax tasks. Workers can claim a tax refund, make Self Assessment payments, and update personal details — all from their phone. They can also read messages and correspondence directly from HMRC, according to Gazette Live.
Self Assessment is the system HMRC uses to collect tax that is not automatically taken from wages. Freelancers and some employees must file a return each year. Having the app set up early means workers are ready if they ever need to use this system, Leeds Live reported.
First-time workers are especially vulnerable to tax mistakes. Without the right records, new employees can end up on the wrong tax code. A wrong tax code means you pay too much — or too little — tax. Paying too little can result in an unexpected bill from HMRC later, Wales Online noted.
Downloading the app before starting work gives employees a clear view of their tax position from the very beginning. HMRC says catching errors early is far simpler than fixing them after months of wrong deductions have built up, according to Liverpool Echo.
The HMRC alert lands at a busy moment. Thousands of university leavers are searching for permanent work over the summer months. Graduate schemes and apprenticeships are opening up across the UK, meaning large numbers of people will be entering formal employment — and the tax system — for the first time, Daily Post reported.
HMRC's message is simple: set up the app now, not later. It takes only a few minutes and can save hours of confusion down the line. The app is available free from the Apple App Store and Google Play, Lancs Live reported.
