Hendrick Motorsports Signs Corey Day to Long-Term Extension and Plans 2027 Cup Debut

Day’s two O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victories came at Talladega Superspeedway on April 25 and Dover Motor Speedway on May 16; he then opened the championship Chase with a second-place finish at Darlington Raceway, moving to fifth in the standings.
Day will continue racing the No. 17 Chevrolet with full-season sponsorship from HendrickCars.com, and he has recorded the series’ third-most top-10 finishes during his first full season.
The 20-year-old is a second-generation dirt racer who began transitioning to pavement in 2024; before this season, he had made four Craftsman Truck Series starts in 2024 and 20 combined Truck and O’Reilly Series starts in 2025.
Rick Hendrick said Day arrived with “generational talent but almost no experience racing on pavement,” while emphasizing that the driver is “just beginning to scratch the surface.”
Jeff Gordon said Day’s progress reflects the value of regular competition, stating, “There’s no substitute for seat time,” and adding that Day “puts in the work” and is “not afraid to ask questions.”
Hendrick Motorsports has locked in 20-year-old Corey Day to a long-term contract extension, keeping him full-time in the No. 17 Chevrolet for NASCAR's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2027 and adding a limited Cup Series schedule. Day has won twice this season and is competing for the series championship in his first full year on pavement, a remarkable jump from his dirt-racing roots.
Team owner Rick Hendrick and vice chairman Jeff Gordon praised Day's rapid development and character. Hendrick said Day arrived with "generational talent but almost no experience racing on pavement" and is "just beginning to scratch the surface." The deal signals Hendrick's commitment to developing the 20-year-old, though his longer-term Cup future remains uncertain because the team's four full-time spots are already spoken for.
Day won at Talladega Superspeedway on April 25 and Dover Motor Speedway on May 16, marking two national-series victories in his debut full season. He then opened the championship Chase with a second-place finish at Darlington Raceway on September 5, moving to fifth in the standings. According to NASCAR.com, Day has recorded the series' third-most top-10 finishes during 2026.
Before this year, Day was a second-generation dirt racer who won the 2023 King of the West Sprint Car Series and three straight Gold Cup Sprint Car titles. He made just four Craftsman Truck Series starts in 2024 and 20 combined Truck and secondary-series starts in 2025. His transition from dirt to pavement stock cars is historically fast—a testament to raw speed and work ethic.
Hendrick Motorsports launched a full-time secondary-series effort with the No. 17 specifically to fast-track Day's growth. Jeff Gordon stressed the necessity of seat time: "There's no substitute for seat time. He puts in the work and isn't afraid to ask questions." HendrickCars.com provides full-season sponsorship, giving Day consistent resources and data to improve.
This marks Hendrick's first full season in NASCAR's secondary series in 20 years. The investment reflects the team owner's belief that rushing Day into full-time Cup racing would be premature. Instead, Hendrick is building him methodically through regular competition and mentorship.
Day will make his Cup Series debut in 2027 with 5–6 select races, according to Hendrick General Manager Jeff Andrews. Because NASCAR's Charter Agreement caps teams at four full-time entries and Hendrick's four spots are occupied by Kyle Larson, William Byron, Connor Zilisch (joining in 2028), and Alex Bowman, the team cannot run a fifth in-house car.
Instead, Day's Cup outings will run through Hendrick's technical ally Spire Motorsports, a common arrangement in NASCAR. Larson and Gordon will target a mix of short tracks and 1.5-mile ovals, likely concentrated in the second half of 2027, to give Day experience without overwhelming him early in the year.
