Refugees Face SNAP Cuts

Recent SNAP cuts are leaving vulnerable refugees and asylees stranded without food assistance.

Some refugees say the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cuts are leaving them in limbo, as many immigrants, including asylees, cannot access SNAP benefits due to last year's passage of the federal "Big Beautiful Bill." Many are being told they must adjust their status to that of a permanent resident or risk losing their benefits. The loss of SNAP benefits has led to an increase in demand for food, with empty shelves showing at Urbandale Food Pantry. The CEO, Patty Sneddon-Kisting, encourages anyone in need of access to food to reach out to their local food pantries for support.
