India Records Record Foreign Direct Investment as Make in India Turns Twelve
India recorded a record $94.53 billion in foreign direct investment in fiscal 2025-26, bringing cumulative inflows since 2014-15 to $843 billion, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said as the country marked the 12th anniversary of its Make in India campaign. Goyal said the initiative aims to position India as a manufacturer for global markets, citing production-linked incentive programs, business reforms and new industrial infrastructure as contributors to growth. The incentive schemes have generated reported investments of 2.40 trillion rupees, production and sales of 23.8 trillion rupees, exports of 15.2 trillion rupees, and more than 1.46 million direct and indirect jobs.
Goyal said Make in India was intended not only to reduce reliance on imported goods but to build an economy that could produce for consumers worldwide; he recalled that India’s manufacturing potential was debated when many products used domestically were imported.
Goyal identified electronics and telecom, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, automobiles, IT hardware and speciality steel as sectors that have significantly benefited from the PLI schemes.
Goyal said more than 470 crore orders had been placed through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
Goyal described Make in India’s impact as extending beyond the investment and production figures, saying it had fostered confidence among startups, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, innovators, exporters and the public that India could make, innovate and compete globally.
