Sony Ends PHYSINT Funding Before Hideo Kojima Secures Xbox Publishing Partnership

Kojima said his relationship with Sony has changed over the years, contrasting his earlier closeness with former Sony executives Ken Kutaragi and Kaz Hirai with the current situation: “I’ve been working with them for like 30 years… But it’s not like that recently.”
Kojima Productions kept Sony’s decision from most employees while Kojima searched for a replacement partner, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding the studio’s future after the funding ended.
Kojima said Xbox brought technical, marketing and playtest support to PHYSINT, and its broader view of the project helped persuade him to reframe the game as a multimedia intellectual property.
Xbox’s publishing arrangement includes actor Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT’s lead, according to Kojima Productions’ official announcement.
PHYSINT’s development remains at an early technical stage: Kojima said the team is conducting scans and technology experiments, and that an engine for the game has not yet been selected.
Sony abruptly ended its funding for Hideo Kojima's espionage game PHYSINT during a June Zoom call, shocking the legendary designer and briefly threatening his independent studio's survival. PC Gamer reported that Kojima received no explanation for the decision, leaving him initially worried about layoffs and loan obligations. But Kojima Productions quickly bounced back, securing Xbox as PHYSINT's new publisher and reframing the project as a multimedia property featuring actor Bill Skarsgård as the lead.
Kojima stressed that he still respects Sony and that his studio remains healthy and profitable. Wccftech reported that Kojima expressed frustration about the relationship shift, noting he had worked with Sony for 30 years but saying "it's not like that recently." The developer denied reports that Death Stranding's sales caused the split and insisted its PlayStation partnership remains strong.
The Zoom call in June caught Kojima completely off guard. Fandomwire reported that his mind "went blank" as Sony announced it would no longer fund PHYSINT. His immediate fear: could Kojima Productions survive the loss? The studio had stakes in the project beyond creative ambition—loan obligations and staff paychecks hung in the balance.
Kojima Productions kept the news quiet while searching for a replacement partner. Most employees remained unaware of the crisis unfolding behind closed doors. This secrecy bought Kojima time to find Xbox without panicking his team or derailing ongoing work.
Kojima had built PHYSINT alongside Sony for years, but the partnership wasn't always so distant. Wccftech noted that Kojima contrasted his close working relationships with former Sony executives Ken Kutaragi and Kaz Hirai to his current dynamic with the company. "I've been working with them for like 30 years," Kojima said, "but it's not like that recently."
Kojima stressed he bears no ill will toward Sony despite the sudden cut. Enduins reported that Kojima Productions issued statements reaffirming respect for the company and denying rumors that Death Stranding's commercial performance triggered the split. The studio emphasized its relationship with PlayStation remains intact.
Xbox's publishing arrangement offered more than just money—it brought technical expertise, marketing muscle, and playtesting support. MP1st reported that Xbox's broader view of PHYSINT as a multimedia intellectual property helped persuade Kojima to reimagine the game beyond a traditional video game release.
The team is now scaling down to focus on core technical work. Kojima said developers are conducting scans and technology experiments, while an engine for the game remains unchosen. Some staff shifted to the studio's other project, OD, as PHYSINT enters a leaner phase focused on concept, story, casting, and technology development.
One question lingers: will PHYSINT still come to PlayStation? Kojima declined to confirm either way, leaving the door open to multiplatform release or Xbox exclusivity. PC Gamer noted that Kojima emphasized the project's multimedia ambitions, suggesting the focus has shifted beyond any single platform.
What's certain is that PHYSINT lives on in a new form. With Bill Skarsgård attached as the lead character and Xbox backing the vision, Kojima Productions has transformed a crisis into an opportunity. The game remains in early technical stages, but the studio's survival no longer hangs in doubt.
