Delayed Southwest Monsoon Reaches Kerala, Crucial for India's Agriculture and Economy

The southwest monsoon has officially arrived over Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department noting it is about three days later than the normal June 1 onset, though conditions have now become favorable for further advance. After Kerala, meteorologists expect the rains to spread northward in stages, with Goa, parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, remaining areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and some northeastern regions likely to see monsoon coverage over the coming days. Over Kerala, the IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next week and also warned of squally winds in multiple parts of India, while cities including Delhi and Chennai face rain and thunderstorm alerts. The monsoon’s timing and distribution remain crucial for India’s largely agriculture-driven economy, since roughly 51% of cultivated land depends on monsoon rainfall, influencing rural incomes, food prices, and broader demand. Alongside the regional forecasts, the IMD has pegged the season’s overall rainfall at around 90% of the Long Period Average, a level that would indicate a near-normal monsoon overall.
IMD forecasts cited that isolated heavy-to-very-heavy rain over Kerala was expected in the specific range of 7 to 20 cm over the next six to seven days—adding concrete rainfall amounts beyond the general “isolated heavy to very heavy” description.
Several reports attributed the delayed monsoon onset to “a developing typhoon over the western Pacifi[c],” providing a specific meteorological reason for the late arrival rather than only noting the timetable slip.
IMD guidance also quantified wind risk: squally winds of up to 40–50 km/h were expected over large parts of northwest, central and east India, and south peninsular India through the week.
The monsoon-delay context included that the onset had been forecast for May 26 but was pushed back after conditions “did not develop as anticipated,” giving the earlier timeline that was missed.
Agriculture-risk framing was more specific in one report: the Agriculture Ministry said monsoon-linked irrigation supports around 40% of total agricultural output (in addition to the 51% cultivated land figure already noted elsewhere).
