Ohio State Dominates Iowa 31-14 Behind Jeremiah Smith's Record Performance

Ohio State dominated Iowa 31–14 on the road in Iowa City, staying unbeaten in Big Ten play and moving to 4–1 overall. Buckeyes Wire reported that wide receiver Jeremiah Smith had a historic day with 11 catches for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns, breaking Ohio State's all-time records for both receptions and receiving touchdowns in the same game.
The win came in front of ESPN's College GameDay at Kinnick Stadium, a venue where Ohio State had not played since a devastating 2017 loss. Des Moines Register noted that the Buckeyes built a comfortable halftime lead of 17–6 and pulled away decisively in the second half, outgaining Iowa by over 200 yards total.
Jeremiah Smith caught 11 passes for 206 yards and scored twice, cementing himself as Ohio State's greatest receiver. Hawk Central reported Smith surpassed Emeka Egbuka's record of 205 career receptions and Chris Olave's mark of 35 career receiving touchdowns. Quarterback Julian Sayin threw 20 of 27 completions for 324 yards and 3 touchdowns, connecting with Smith frequently throughout the night.
Iowa's defensive coordinators tried bracketing Smith with cornerbacks Jaylen Watson and Jacob Wallace, plus safety help over the top. The strategy failed to slow Ohio State's offensive star, who extended his career receiving yardage total to 3,381 yards. Head coach Ryan Day called the trip to Iowa City Newsday "a big opportunity" to build momentum and erase the memory of the 2017 blowout loss.
The Buckeyes outgained Iowa by more than 200 total yards and racked up nine additional first downs. Ohio State's passing attack proved nearly unstoppable, with Sayin spreading the ball effectively across multiple receivers. Iowa's defense succeeded only in limiting Ohio State's rushing game to 3.4 yards per carry, but that stop proved meaningless against the aerial bombardment.
Iowa trailed 10–6 after the first quarter and fell behind 17–6 at halftime. Hawk Central reported that Ohio State scored two additional touchdowns in the second half to pull away. The Hawkeyes were unable to generate any offensive momentum and never threatened once the Buckeyes took control of the game.
The win moves Ohio State to 4–1 overall and 1–0 in Big Ten conference play. The Buckeyes kept their national championship and conference title aspirations firmly intact with a convincing performance in a hostile environment. Next week, Ohio State returns home to face Maryland at 4:15 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
Iowa's loss drops the Hawkeyes to 4–1 as well but leaves their Big Ten title hopes in serious jeopardy. Ohio State also faces a high-stakes conference matchup against No. 6 Indiana on October 17, a rematch against the team that defeated the Buckeyes in last year's Big Ten Championship Game. The road schedule toughens considerably for both programs.
