Denver Broncos Lean on Strong Ground Game to Protect Rookie Quarterback Bo Nix

After a Week 1 loss, Denver beat Jacksonville 20-13 in Week 2, with its running game helping control the closing minutes and rookie Jonah Coleman scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown. Coach Sean Payton has emphasized a balanced, run-oriented offense to ease pressure on Bo Nix, who has faced pressure on 41.5% of his dropbacks through two games. Nix is taking greater responsibility for changing plays and protections at the line, working with offensive coordinator Davis Webb and center Luke Wattenberg. The Broncos now face the Rams on Sunday night, where Nix will meet veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford for the first time; Stafford is coming off a four-touchdown performance.
Coleman’s tackle-breaking approach was shaped by his college coach Scottie Graham, who used yoga-ball drills to help the self-described contact seeker make defenders miss. Coleman averaged .316 forced missed tackles per carry in college, the fourth-highest rate among running backs since 2014, according to Pro Football Focus.
Denver’s offensive-line performance has been uneven: Quinn Meinerz and Garett Bolles have posted strong grades, while center Luke Wattenberg, left guard Ben Powers and right tackle Mike McGlinchey have lower pass-blocking marks. The Broncos rank sixth in run-block win rate but 18th in pass-block win rate.
Stafford threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns against the Giants while the Rams were without top receiver Puka Nacua.
Nix completed 22 of 31 passes for 288 yards against Jacksonville, despite throwing an end-zone interception.
