India and Switzerland Celebrate Trade Pact Anniversary With New Mobility Agreements

Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin exchanged several memoranda of understanding during their delegation-level talks in New Delhi, alongside the TEPA anniversary discussions.
The mobility arrangements were specifically a Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement and a Young Professionals Agreement; Modi said they would create opportunities in Switzerland for Indian students, researchers, professionals and young people.
The agreement was described by Modi as India’s first free trade agreement with any economic bloc in Europe.
India and Switzerland marked the first anniversary of their EFTA trade agreement with new mobility deals and ambitious investment goals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the pact with the European Free Trade Association—which includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein—aims to bring in $100 billion in investment and create one million direct jobs across India over 15 years, DD India reported.
Modi called the agreement India's first free trade pact with any European economic bloc. The two countries also signed migration and mobility partnerships to expand opportunities for Indian students, researchers, professionals and young people in Switzerland, Revoi.in noted.
During delegation-level talks in New Delhi, Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin exchanged several memoranda of understanding. The leaders signed a Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement and a Young Professionals Agreement, both designed to strengthen people-to-people ties between the nations, Tribune India reported.
Swiss President Parmelin called the India-EFTA trade agreement a 'win-win' model. He highlighted growing corporate interest from Swiss companies in deepening their presence in India, DD India noted.
The trade pact is expected to boost Indian exports of agricultural goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles and engineering products. In return, EFTA countries plan to invest heavily in Indian sectors like biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing and sustainability initiatives, Newsbytes reported.
The $100 billion investment target applies to all EFTA member countries combined, not Switzerland alone. Over 15 years, the pact aims to generate lasting economic growth and job creation across multiple Indian industries.
India's agreement with EFTA marks a significant milestone—it is the nation's first free trade agreement with any European economic bloc. The pact reflects India's growing role in global commerce and its push to diversify trade partnerships beyond traditional markets.
Beyond trade, India and Switzerland agreed to deepen ties in defence, nuclear energy and scientific research. These broader commitments signal a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, Revoi.in stated.
