Powerful Nor'easter Disrupts Northeast Ferry Services, Transit and Weekend Events

A nor’easter forecast to bring heavy rain, high winds, rough seas and coastal flooding is disrupting travel and events across New England and the Northeast. Hy-Line has suspended service to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard through at least Saturday, the Steamship Authority is making weather-dependent cancellations, and the MBTA has canceled weekend ferry service, with additional weekday routes affected; Cross Sound Ferry has canceled numerous New London–Orient Point sailings, while other Long Island Sound services remain scheduled or subject to change. Some Block Island ferry departures were canceled, while Bridgeport–Port Jefferson service had not announced cancellations. Providence’s WaterFire lighting was rescheduled, Newport Polo’s finals were postponed, and Maine’s Fall Fest and Poland Heritage Day were canceled. Northborough Applefest canceled its parade, fireworks and many outdoor activities, with a decision on its 5K pending; the North Shore Life & Wellness Expo was also canceled. Separately, BC Ferries canceled sailings because of a mechanical problem and essential vessel maintenance, not the nor’easter; travelers and eventgoers should check for updated schedules and announcements.
The Steamship Authority planned to send the Monomoy to Nantucket without passengers to deliver fuel, then return to the mainland at 1:30 p.m.
On the Steamship Authority’s Woods Hole–Martha’s Vineyard route, service was to continue as conditions allowed, but diversions from Oak Bluffs to Vineyard Haven were described as extremely likely.
The MBTA warned that severe weather could also slow buses, subway trains and Commuter Rail trains; flooding could lead to subway or Commuter Rail suspensions.
For the planned Oct. 3 Bowen Island ferry cancellations, BC Ferries said a 12-passenger water taxi would serve foot passengers, with tickets available at the Horseshoe Bay terminal; the changes were tied to a required “Right Angle Drive exchange.”
