Kotdwar Police Detain Deepak Kumar Following Dispute Over Facebook Post

Police said Deepak was taken into custody under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita as a preventive measure, citing concerns that an offence or breach of peace could occur.
The complaint, as described by police, alleged that Deepak threatened to kill the businessman; the initial case was registered under BNS Sections 351(2) and 352, for criminal intimidation and intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace.
As a further precaution, police conducted a flag march in Kotdwar’s Municipal Corporation area on Thursday evening.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had previously described Deepak as a symbol of “love and humanity,” a characterization revisited in coverage of the arrest.
Deepak Kumar, a gym owner known as Mohammad Deepak, was granted bail just one day after police arrested him in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand. Deccan Herald reported that the arrest stemmed from a dispute with local businessman Sanjeev Tonk over comments on a Facebook post about a mosque demolition in Ujjain. Police said Deepak threatened and abused the trader during a confrontation.
Police cited concerns about public order when they detained Deepak under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita as a preventive measure. The Hans India noted that traders gathered at the police station demanding action, prompting authorities to deploy personnel and conduct a flag march through the Municipal Corporation area. A sub-divisional magistrate approved his bail after review.
The dispute erupted after Deepak commented on a Facebook post about a mosque demolition in Ujjain. ETV Bharat reported that businessman Sanjeev Tonk filed a complaint alleging Deepak threatened to kill him and hurled abusive language. Police registered charges under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Sections 351(2) and 352, covering criminal intimidation and intentional insult intended to provoke breach of peace.
Officers reviewed video footage and other material before adding charges. Millat Times described the incident as a dispute between the gym owner and the businessman, noting that the case remained subject to investigation as police gathered evidence.
After Deepak's arrest, traders assembled at the Kotdwar police station to demand stronger action. Authorities responded by stationing additional personnel at the station to monitor the situation and prevent escalation. The Hans India reported that police conducted a flag march Thursday evening through the Municipal Corporation area as a precautionary measure.
The police action reflected concerns that the dispute could spark broader communal tensions. The deployment of security personnel and the flag march signaled official worry about potential unrest related to the underlying social media controversy about the mosque demolition.
Deepak spent only one night in police custody before a sub-divisional magistrate released him on bail. ABP Live reported that the quick bail decision came after police completed their initial investigation into the allegations. The magistrate's approval suggested sufficient grounds to release Deepak pending trial.
Deepak's arrest drew attention partly due to his previous public profile. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had previously described him as a symbol of "love and humanity" after Deepak confronted Bajrang Dal members who were harassing a Muslim shopkeeper—a characterization revisited in coverage of his detention.
