Dodgers Express Confidence in Healthier Shohei Ohtani Ahead of NLDS Opener

As the Dodgers prepare to open the NLDS on Saturday, manager Dave Roberts and general manager Brandon Gomes say Shohei Ohtani is feeling better after missing time with right-biceps and left-knee injuries. The team is using its playoff bye to build up his timing with live at-bats, and plans to rely on him as a hitter after ending his pitching season in July. Ohtani went 5-for-21 in five games after returning from the injured list and finished the regular season batting .275 with 30 home runs. While Dodgers officials express confidence in his health and communication, concerns remain that Ohtani has previously understated his symptoms, and a commentary argues he must be candid about any lingering problems so the team can plan his workload and lineup accordingly.
Before going on the injured list, Ohtani hit .198 and struck out 34 times in 24 games, underscoring the slump that preceded his absence.
Roberts planned for Ohtani to take five to seven live at-bats before Game 1 and also wanted him to hit off the Trajekt pitching machine.
The Dodgers finished 100-62, earned the National League’s No. 2 seed and will face either the Braves or Phillies in the NLDS.
Before the late-season injuries, Ohtani had hit .293 with a .403 on-base percentage and .549 slugging percentage in the first half; after the All-Star break, he hit .245 with a .772 OPS over 47 games.
