UCLA Football Prepares For Season Opener Against Cal With New Strategic Approaches

UCLA football practice took place on Wednesday, three days before the team's opening game against Cal. UCLA defensive back Robert Stafford III made a highlight interception during the live portion of practice. The team's defensive coordinator, Colin Hitschler, said Stafford will have an opportunity to play a larger role under Hitchler. UCLA offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy has a philosophy of not keeping a depth chart, instead analyzing each player's size, strengths and weaknesses to create a roster that fits his scheme. Kennedy also noted the growth of quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who has shown improvement after coming to Tennessee last season. Kennedy plans to play against Cal defensive coordinator Michael Hutchings, who served as defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings the past two seasons.
